Scaling Rails Screencasts

In December of 2008 we were approached by New Relic to produce a series of educational screencasts targeting developers on Scaling Rails Applications. Since then we've produced over 18 videos which utilized the following techniques:

  • Teaching step-by-step
    It's not easy to teach advanced programming topics. To better convey some of the more detailed topics presented, we utilized custom object diagrams and animations to ensure that each subject was taught clearly in a way that even a beginner could understand.
  • Green screen production
    The first set of videos utilized a green screen to keep the video both entertaining and engaging. We utilized Final Cut Pro to drop in live-action shots of our own team members walking users through the topics presented. Think of it like your teacher walking you through your last geometry lesson.
  • Publishing for all video platforms
    We published each screencast in several popular video codecs. Doing this allowed their viewers to watch the videos wherever is most convenient for them, be it on their PC, Mac, Apple TV or iPhone.
